The Golden Gate Bridge spans the one mile Golden Gate strait, between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Built in 1927, this suspension bridge joins San Francisco to Marin County. It carries both the famous U.S. Highway 101 and the equally famous California State Coastal Highway 1. The bridge is easily one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco. According to Wikipedia It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineer, and The Frommer's Travel Guide describes the Golden Gate Bridge as "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world:
